The fever was so severe that Swamiji was shaking with chills and panting to breathe.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In those days, his whole house was the dome that is now just the living room of Crystal Hermitage. His bedroom was a loft a few steps to the left of the front door. Several of us were sitting in the loft on the floor near his bed keeping him company.<\/p>\n

When Shivani came in, Swamiji said, \u201cDon\u2019t come too close, you might catch what I have.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you have it, I want it<\/em>,\u201d Shivani said, then walked to his bed and took his hand.<\/p>\n

Not long after, there was a loud knock on the door. When I opened it, Sidney* was standing on the doorstep, quite agitated. I stepped outside and closed the door behind me, so that our conversation would not disturb Swamiji.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease whisper,\u201d I said, \u201cSwamiji is very sick.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI have to see Swamiji,\u201d Sidney said in an urgent whisper.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am sorry, that is not possible. Swamiji is quite ill,\u201d I said. I was his secretary and made the appointments for people to see him.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I have<\/em> to see him,\u201d he said again.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease understand, he is too sick to see anyone,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

We were whispering; our voices could not have carried through the closed door. But now Shivani stepped outside, sent by Swamiji. \u201cPlease come in,\u201d she said to Sidney. \u201cSwamiji says he\u2019ll be right down to see you.\u201d<\/p>\n

For the next twenty minutes, Swamiji stood in the entry way, clad in pajamas and bathrobe, talking with Sidney until the problem was resolved and Sidney felt calm enough to go home.<\/p>\n

A few minutes into their conversation, I interrupted to say to Swamiji, \u201cPerhaps it would better if you sat down.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m fine just where I am,\u201d he said firmly. His voice was strong, his breathing normal, the chills were gone.<\/p>\n

But then, as soon as Sidney had left, Swamiji went back to the loft, climbed into bed, and immediately resumed his fever. For the rest of the day he was gasping for breath, his body shaking with chills.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
